Energy Leadership: How Awareness Shapes Your Workplace Experience
Have you ever noticed how some days at work feel effortless, while others feel like an uphill battle? The difference might lie in your energy. Bruce Schneider’s concept of Energy Leadership explains how the energy we bring to situations—our level of awareness—impacts how we think, feel, and act.
There are 7 levels of energy, and each one influences how we see the world. The higher the level, the more consciously we’re able to respond to challenges rather than simply react.
Let’s break them down:
Level 1: Victim
This is the energy of “everything is happening to me.” It’s when work feels overwhelming and disengaging. You might think, "What’s the point?" It’s burnout territory.
Level 2: Conflict
Here, it’s all about opposition—"me vs. them." Frustration and blame drive action. While it can push you to overcome obstacles, staying at this level creates unnecessary stress.
Level 3: Responsibility
At this level, you start taking ownership. “How can I make this work?” It’s solution-oriented thinking—moving forward, even when things aren’t perfect.
Level 4: Compassion
Now, the focus shifts to others. It’s about collaboration, empathy, and support. You’re not just in it for yourself but to help others succeed.
Level 5: Opportunity
Here, challenges become opportunities. You’re curious, creative, and open to new possibilities. Problems? No big deal—there’s always something to learn.
Level 6: Flow
This is where everything just clicks. You’re deeply connected to your purpose, and work feels more like play. You see how everything fits together.
Level 7: Passion
Pure passion and joy. There’s no fear or doubt, only limitless potential. At this level, you’re fully aligned with your work, operating with purpose and creativity.
What Does This Mean in the Workplace?
When you’re aware of your energy level, you can choose how you show up. Teams operating at higher energy levels are more innovative, collaborative, and resilient. But if people are stuck in lower levels, you’ll see more disengagement, conflict, and burnout.
